The Prestigious Melbourne Cup

Horseracing is a worldwide sporting event. In Australia, it is the Melbourne Cup as the big time thoroughbred horse racing event. In fact, this cup is known to be "the race that stops a nation". The horserace is mainly 3,200 meter length and opened for horses that are three year olds and above.

Not only is Melbourne Cup known for its popularity, but also because of the purse in every race. In fact, this event is the one providing the highest "two-mile" handicapping in the world.

For the last three years of this event, the total purse (money and trophy) was more than $6 million (in Australian dollars) with the 2012 event having total purse of Australian $ 6.2 million. This horse race is considered as a national icon.

The event is managed and overseen by the Victoria Racing Club and held regularly on the Flemington Racecourse that is located at Melbourne, Victoria. Every race is held on the first Tuesday of November at 3 pm. The event started way back in 1861 and started as two-mile race (that is approximately 3,218 meters). The distant was shortened to 3,200 meters because the country adopted the International System (metric system) in the 1970s. It was 1972 that the race used the 3,200 meters distant. In the history of the Melbourne Cup, it is Kingston Rule who holds the fastest time, which is 3 minutes and 16.3 seconds that he won in 1990.

For the 2012 edition of the Melbourne Cup with more than 105,000 audience, it was Green Moon and his jockey Brett Prebble who came away as the winners. The race horse is owned by Lloyd Williams and trained by Robert Hickmott. This was the fourth title for Williams as an owner. Green Moon won by a length to the runner up, Fiorente and one and a quarter length ahead of the third place Jakkalberry.

Korean Americans disturbed by the Casino Buses

There has been a growing concern among Korean Americans regarding the increasing number of casino buses which encourage people especially senior citizens to gamble.

According to Korea Times, the casino buses offer ride from New York and Connecticut and vice versa. The shuttle service is essentially free because the passengers pay much more than the ride. The ticket for the shuttle service cost from $15 to $40. Along with the ride, the passenger will also enjoy buffet coupons care of the casino and some game money tickets which cost $20 to $40.

A lot of people are now choosing these mobile casinos especially Korean and Chinese American senior citizens. They prefer the mobile casino as a means of transportation because of the free perks they get from the casino and at the same a way for them to relieve their boredom. Unfortunately, the effects are not all positive because there are increasing cases of gambling addiction in the community.
The people in the community are now having concerns regarding the promotion of casino and gambling through the shuttle buses. They worry that the casino buses might be the cause of gambling addictions especially to the senior citizens. The senior citizens might end up relieving their boredom through gambling and would end up losing great amounts of money.

Because of gambling, some senior citizens end up without money and welfare benefits that eventually would lead to them being homeless. According to Lee, a bus rider, he has witnessed himself the negative effects of the casino buses to many elderly people. He said that he knew a senior who got used to going to casinos to have something to do but ended up being addicted to gambling, lost all the money he saved and was divorced by his wife.

“Excessive gambling can have debilitating effects on people” according to Regina Kim, the executive director of the Korean Family Counseling and Research Center. She said that being addicted to gambling because of escaping boredom and relieving stress can lead to domestic abuse and even divorce. According to her, these kinds of problems require the help of community to come up with community-level solutions.

Stakes of the US Olympic Basketball Team in London 2012 Olympic Betting

The US Olympic basketball team has always been a favorite in Olympics. The famous National Basketball Association players mostly play for the United States. Thus, the NBA Superstars are all together in one “DreamTeam” which makes them the team to beat every Olympics. Since basketball was included in the Olympics in 1936, the United States won 13 gold medals out of 17. But then some sports experts are still having second thoughts in the US Olympic Basketball Team’s gold medal this 2012 London Olympics. The road to the gold medal may not that easy for Kobe Bryant, Lebron James and the U.S. team.

In online betting, there is no doubt that the U.S.Basketball team has their strong advantages but there are still possible loopholes to their strength. People know that nothing is certain when it comes to the Olympics. They should be aggressive in pursuing the gold medal. The U.S. team also has some tough competitors since other NBA Superstars are also playing for their home country. Team Spain is one of teams to look after in the 2012 Olympics. The famous Gasol brothers will be playing for Spain. Other countries competing for gold would be Russia, Argentina, Brazil, Australia etc. In 2004, the U.S. Dream Team failed to take home the gold and lost to Argentina who nabbed their first gold medal in Olympics basketball. United States only finished with bronze.

In this year’s London Olympics exhibition matches, the U.S. Basketball team has been showing a great performance and giving all they got when they won all of their matches. In their final match against another strong competitor, Argentina, the U.S. Dream team showed a slow start that allowed Argentina to score 80 points and win by only six points in the game. Sports betting online experts are sure that Argentina is just one of the strong teams the U.S. Olympic Basketball team has to face and conquer. There are still other strong competitors that would put the high stakes of the U.S. Dream Team at stake.
