Horse Racing Schedule for 2012

Every horse racing fan knows that the season for races doesn’t start with a specific calendar date but with the invitation of specific openings that usher in each Horse Racing season.

Summer starts with the Del Mar Opening followed by the event at Santa Anita for the Hollywood Park and Santa Anita ushers in the end of the year with a short winter season before taking the recession to prepare for Kentucky Derby qualifiers in January. The Breeder’s cup in November is the culmination of the most watched horse races of the season and is seconded by the Jockey Club Gold Cup. The races that preceded these two momentous sporting events are the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Cup and the Preakness Stakes, collectively known as the Triple Crown.

Winning horses that gain accolade from the Jockey Club Gold Cup get an automatic entry to the Breeders cup which equate to prestige and recognition from fans and the horse racing community. The champions for the year are finalized in the Breeder’s cup where a short recess is announced thereafter. Horse racing season resumes in the spring, where 40 of the country’s preparatory races are held in culmination of the Kentucky Derby. Anticipate that some of these major events are a must watch in horse racing fashion.

Top Horse Races to watch out for in the Summer

Just how many hopefuls vie to contend in the yearly Kentucky Derby? Approximately 400 competitors roll into the Kentucky Derby watch list starting January each year where after much sorting and statistical analysis 20 competing horses are slated for the main event. Understanding how the final list is prepared is another discussion in its entirety.

The cliff’s Edge Derby trial is normally held on April at Churchill Downs and is considered one of the prep races for the Kentucky Derby. Recently this important race has also been helmed as a preparatory race for not only the Kentucky Derby but the Preakness meet as well.

Other important races not to miss are the twenty million Dubai World Cup and Florida Derby Million Dollar Race. Don’t forget about the Santa Anita and Wood Memorial Cups as well as the Louisiana Derby where most classic races dictate possible outcomes for the year’s grand finale and is a chance for some of the best race horses to show off their potential for the year.
