The charisma of Wood Memorial has not waned in the last few years as evidenced by the overflowing support from horse racing enthusiasts and its capability to attract purebreds that are considered royalty from the tracks of the Kentucky Derby. As exciting as this is, none of the current contenders made an appearance at the starting gate a month later for the onset of the Run for the Roses. It has also been cited that none of the horses who have ran in Wood Memorial has successfully gained the Derby cup since the historical win of Cide in 2003. An even catastrophic observation is the fact that there has only been one horse to prevail in the Wood and the Derby since 1981, with Fusaichi Pegasus making waves in 2000.
Into the Wood Memorial fold comes the unprecedented Gemologist, and Alpha who have both garnered their qualification to Louisville by showcasing a memorable stretch duel in the 88th cast of the Wood Memorial with Gemologist taking the win by a mere neck and all in a year where other competitive players have created at least one detriment to their 2012 track record. This astounding run could potentially make Gemologist betting royalty on the much anticipated May 5th.
“So far, it would be hard to be unhappy with anything he’s done his whole career, It was great to see. It looked like he had a little something left after the wire, so I think from a conditioning standpoint, with a good mile race and a good 1 1/8-mile race under our belt, hopefully we can have a good month of training leading up to [the Derby].” This according to Gemologist’s trainer Todd Pletcher.
Tood Pletcher expressed a slew of emotions about what had been observed in the track of the nine furlong Wood Memorial, comparatively shorter by a furlong compared to the mile and ¾ Derby track. Gemologist who was able to track the pacemaking The Lumber Guy while three wide in third at the early parts of the race, sprint to the front at the height of the stretch with the guidance of Javier Castellano and then proceeded to drift into the rail before waiting for competition.
