Three Winners Drink The Kool-Aid With $640 Million Lotto Prize

Three tickets bought from different states are now the lucky beneficiaries of the $640 Million prize from the Mega Millions Jackpot Draw last Friday, March 31, 2012.

The winning tickets sold from Maryland, Kansas and Illinois successfully matched all required six number draws from the Friday Draw, although none of the winners had come forward until Monday of the next week.

Lottery officials say that winners of this kind of jackpot normally take a cool-off period of anywhere from a month to half a year. Some even gave advice to the winners, telling them to abstain from major financial decisions such as impromptu investments or lavish spending. "People need time to adjust to this huge change in their lives, the fear is that people get this lump sum and go crazy " said Michael Garrison, of Garrison Financial Inc., in Chatham, Mass.

Darla Beckette who is the assistant manager from the Red Bud Motomart, where the ticket for the Illinois jackpot winner was bought had to deal with a swarm of reporters asking more information about when the ticket was purchased and who had won it. “I was so excited as if I had won. there even was a couple from St. Louis who said they just had to come check it out." The Motomart proprietors will accept $500,000, for selling the winning lotto ticket.

Another Mega Millions ticket winner purchased his from a Milford 7-Eleven in Milford Mill Maryland a few miles outside Baltimore, within a few hours away from the jackpot draw broadcast. The owners of the 7-11 are expected to receive a $100,000 bonus. Kansas, who holds the third winning Mega Millions ticket has not divulged any details about where the ticket was purchased or the identity of the winner, except that the ticket was bought from a location in the northeast part of the state.

In the advent of this new found wealth, many financial experts are weighing in their two cents as to how the winners should manager their instant riches. “ Since tax rates are likely to increase in the coming years, asking for a lump sum would actually be the more practical choice” according to Charles Aulino, Director of financial planning at the Glenmede Trust.
